 Do you think he was right to say this to his better half?

I don't.

 A man is not the one who thinks his lady is worth someone better than him but is someone who thinks and gets to the point of understanding the 'forever' concept and sticking by it-

"I think you deserve someone better and I promise you that I will be that 'better' for you. I would make any damn effort to make you feel proud but I won't leave you, ever."

There's a fine line between a man and a coward. Love your woman and own her if you are a man.
